Academic Programs

Noll Lab houses the laboratories which are used by students from many academic departments. Most students receive their graduate degrees in Kinesiology, Physiology or Nutrition. The lab also houses a training grant for students in Physiology. Faculty in Noll mentor students in the Kinesiology and Nutrition Departments of the College of Health and Human Development as well as students in the Intercollege Graduate Program in Physiology. Teaching and research graduate assistantships are available from each of these programs.

Noll Lab is the campus center of a shared Pre-Doctoral Training Grant called "Research Training in Physiological Adaptations to Stress".  The grant is from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.  Dr. Jim Pawelczyk is the Co-investigator who heads the University Park component. Dr. Leonard S. Jefferson at our Hershey campus is the Principal Investigator. The grant provides full tuition and a competitive stipend for students who qualify. The unique focus of the training is to expose students to adaptations the body must make when confronted by both acute and chronic stresses. Successful adaptations result in an improved capacity to meet the next stress while unsuccessful adaptations can lead to illness and pathophysiology. The program emphasizes a multi-level approach to understanding adaptations to stress. Students discuss and investigate stress-induced changes in physiological regulation which occur at levels of inquiry from the gene to the whole body. Students can apply to either the Hershey or University Park Components of the Physiology Program.

For more information contact either Dr. Steve Rannels.  For application procedures including a downloadable preliminary application, contact the Physiology Program.
